A Costa Rican Fly-Fishing Odyssey
By By Jon B. Cave
It's easy to understand how Costa Rica got its name, which translated into English means "rich coast."
From a fishing perspective, however, "rich coasts" would have been more appropriate. There are extensive
undeveloped coastlines on both the Caribbean and Pacific with an abundance of diverse estuaries that
serve as the basis for gigantic and complex food chains that help nourish and sustain both oceans. The
fisheries on each coast are as vast and distinct as their ecosystems.

On each of my past trips to Costa Rica, I have always concentrated my fishing efforts on either the
Caribbean or Pacific side - that is, until my friend Jim Di Berardinis called with the suggestion that we take
an "ultimate fly-fishing odyssey" to both coasts. His idea was to take a weeklong whirlwind bi-coastal
fly-fishing excursion to pursue four of Costa Rica's most prized game fish: tarpon, snook, sailfish and
roosterfish. Since Jim is a part-time Tico (Costa Rican resident), he volunteered to arrange the logistics of
the trip at a time when fishing conditions on both coasts would be optimal.
After considering the probability for both suitable weather and good fishing, Jim felt that the end of February
would be an excellent time of year to make the trip. Although snook fishing might be only slow to fair,
sailfish, tarpon and roosterfish would be near their peak. In addition, there was a good chance of fair
weather since it was a few months yet before the rainy season would start. I couldn't resist the invitation.
